Two Old Folk in Cabo

Cabo San Lucas is Mexico’s third most popular resort, after Cancun and Acapulco. Originally the site of a tuna cannery, Cabo no longer has any commercial fishing. The waters surrounding this tip of Baja California are protected (except for Japan and China which purchased permission for shark fishing. It’s known that they take many other critters, but Mexico hasn’t the resources to police the agreement.)

Mostly a treeless desert, Cabo’s beaches and elite/high priced hotels are the attraction. Tourism is the major industry. Our guide made special note of the safety of Mexico: “Yes, we have drug cartels, but they shot only at one another. We don’t have random mass shootings like the US.” Ouch.

Bob and I ventured out into the heat on two different tours. Bob is still steaming (literally and figuratively) about being denied his horseback excursion. Unbeknownst to him and Oceania, riders were limited to those under 70. Eight over 70 year olds were offered the use of ATVs instead. Go figure.

In my case, I spent almost 6 hours outside in the 90+ degree moist heat and arrived back at the ship with barely enough energy to shower. We were given frequent water breaks, but I am warned and taking a look at my future planned excursions. The waiver forms we signed requested our ages….most of my fellows were in their 60s.

BTW, we have seen half a dozen or so passengers with electric carts and many with canes…but only one with a rollator. Seems odd to me. It is also clear that most of those with canes are limiting their outside time to sunning by the pool…
